Chapter 17
This reading was really cool to me. I have already learned about the Industrial Revolution in the past but it was nice to be refreshed and to also learn a couple new things. One of the parts I found interesting was looking at why it happened in Western Europe and how some people thought that there was no way it could have happened anywhere else. I don't think that is true I think it definitely would have happened somewhere else but I think it just would have taken a little bit longer. As they explained other regions like China and India had already gone through an industrial revolution if you thought about it. They developed paper, gun powder, the printing press, and many other things. However for some reason these regions just kind of stopped innovating. Now the reason why Great Britain was so successful was because the government motivated its people to make new things because they would reward them. Since they had lost the economic support from the American colonies they needed to make up for that revenue so they really pushed their people to innovate. As to what the actual Industrial Revolution was, it was the replacement of human labor and although humans were still needed their tasks were to operate the machines to do the work, and not to do the work themselves. This was still hard because it exposed them to new dangers like getting hurt by the machines or being immune to gasses and chemicals that could have been devastating towards their health. With the development of these machines came the creation of the internal combustion engines which to this day are one of the most important innovations because basically everyone in the world needs or uses it every single day. But this also had its setbacks like exposing harmful gasses into the atmosphere and polluting the earth. All of this also changed the way societies behaved, people did not live like how they used to. There was now things like apartment buildings. The relationships that people used to have with their neighbors were no longer there because people were stuck at work all day. It was hard for parents to raise their kids since they had to work so much, this brought the eruption of orphanages. Ultimately this was great for the world but in the end it did and still has its cons.
