Chapter 16 (Part 2)

This reading was pretty interesting to me because we really got to see how the echoes of the revolution kept going after the revolutions. So not only did one revolution inspire another then inspire another and then twice again. But these same ideas inspired some other movements that were very important. The first movement was the abolition of slavery. What they wanted was what the french and North American people wanted. They wanted freedom, popular sovereignty, and equality. This movement was successful because they had collaboration and protests not only from people who were enslaved themselves but from other people who supported them. It is obvious that if you are enslaved you are not going to be able to protest, so that is when support from other people is really crucial. Another thing is humanization of people who had been enslaved. What that consisted of was people who had made it out of slavery or had been freed telling their story and letting other people know how devastating it really was to be enslaved. Last but not least is awareness of suffering caused by products of slave labor. Basically making people aware of how things they used in everyday life were made and what these people really had to go through.

With the feminist movement again we see the echoes of revolution. They wanted the same three things freedom, equality, and popular sovereignty. Women wanted to just be able to vote, wanted to be able to work, and wanted the ability to pursue and education. However we see how Strayer talks about the women of South America who wanted some totally different things like the safety of their communities and the ability to own land.

With the nationalism movement this is basically forming one common group for a nation. Also then having the idea that our nation is better than any other. Only caring about our interests. This could lead to genocide or conflicts with different identities. If there is two nations that both think they are superior where will they stop to show this. Like Strayer said we really got to see they sense of identity in the first world war, it was basically a competition to see what country was superior. In present day we see things like MAGA which are also a sense of nationalism. The president also experts his nationalism on twitter by having a high school like argument with North Korea.
