Chapter 18

Basically what I saw in this reading was the Europeans second wave of colonialism. Since they were in the midst of the Industrial Revolution they needed more natural resources and also human resources. But with the Industrial Revolution since they were basically superior to anyone else they really made sure they made the other regions feel like they were below them. They viewed these regions as feminine or in other words weak. It also gave them a form of justification for what they were doing. One thing they did in these regions was deeper implementation of status or class divisions. And also introducing things like tax collection. What was really funny or ironic to me though was how they were introducing all of these ideas to the countries they were taking over meanwhile what they were practicing or going toward in their homeland was something completely different. Just like they had done in the Americas Europeans took over land by taking advantage the weaknesses these countries already had. Things like divisions between their own people so making them take out one another, or attacking regions that were already weak. Not only was this offensive to the countries but also to women, they are basically saying that they are the superior region and that men are the superior gender. By doing that they quickly became very powerful in these regions. This really shook things up in regions though because they went from having peace to almost being in war. Some were smart and instead of resisting they just cooperated and in some cases it would benefit them by creating jobs and wealth but this was mainly to people who were already either pretty powerful or wealthy. In the long run though like we've seen before conquest always leads to rebellion or revolt to try and change things to how they were before. What was very different though that made the second wave a lot more different than the first was that the Europeans didn't stay and wipe out the people that were at these lands. If you look at the Americas all of the native americans were basically wiped out and now there are only a few but if you look at Africa it is still primarily populated by African people. Although it still affected them severely, and is the primary reason as to why Africa is still considered an under developed country.
