Sisters of Notre Dame

This was a very interesting read for me. It was cool to learn and see where the basic principles that our school is based on came from. One of the things that I found really Interesting is how the two sisters had two totally different up bringings. Francoise obviously came from a rich family and lived a lavish lifestyle, her dad had a lot of people that worked for him. Julie family could've been one of those workers. At first it was probably definitely hard to bond because you would think that someone of the opposite spectrum like that would never be able to get a long with you. But sometimes I feel like its out differences that really bring us together. They both also wanted the same thing they wanted to give back and help those in need. One thing that I think really shaped Francoise was how her Grandma would always take her and have her help their workers to give them food and medicine for any illness they might be fighting. You would think that someone of Francoise's prestig...

Chapter 15

In this Chapter we got to take a look into religion and what happened to it as the modern societies started to form. Before we talk about the changes I want to first talk about Christianity its self and how there was a split, so there was the Roman Catholics of Western and Central Europe and there was the Eastern Orthodox Church of Eastern Europe and Russia. After that a new split began in the Roman Catholic church when there was a note saying how corrupt the church was and not only that but that at the end of the day you did not have to listen to someone else interpretation of the bible when you could just read and interpret it yourself. After this there was big backlash from people and the Protestant Church was started. This caused a Catholic reformation or counter reformation to fix or address all of the issues that were wrong in the catholic church. But there was still tension between catholic and protestant church and this led to a 30 year basically war between them and it caused ...

Chapter 14 (Part 2)

In this part of Chapter 14 I got to learn more about the slave trade, although i had learned about this before I still was able to learn some new things from reading it. The first that I really did not know was that in the middle east there was a practice where they used slaves long before the Europeans developed it. It was not at the same scale as the Europeans but there was still that practice that existed. It was a lot different however because the way they treated their slaves was very different, in the middle east they were apart of their families and societies unlike the Americas were they were seen as something different. Another thing that i did not know is that Europeans did not go into African and just take people for slavery it was the same African people that took themselves into captivity. Even if the Europeans tried to use force they would not have been successful and they learned that very quickly. I think in some way they were scared of the African people and their army...

Chapter 14 (Part 1)

The most obvious thing that I got out of reading this section is that in this early modern economy the clear dominant leader was China. Everything that had to do with economy and trade was centered around China. Even though Europeans had control of the Americas and were getting all these natural resources they still had to trade with china to get things they needed. The Europeans still had to be apart of the the Indian Ocean trade( Sea Roads ). For a lot of them they were not very successful in doing so. The Spanish tried hard to control the spice trade but they tried to use too much force and were quickly pushed out by Indonesian people and European powers as well. The  Portuguese were a little more successful in that they didn't try to use as much force and tried to bribe and buy their way into the markets. The Dutch and British were probably the most successful in doing so, the dutch did use force as with the British didn't, the British also drove out the Portuguese. Despite...

Chapter 13

Spanish  conquest was brutal they brought over disease that killed a lot of people ignited the slave trade basically wiped out native american populations  women were subject to rape, abuse, and violence created a division between race The spanish basically came and wiped whole populations out with the help of diseases and man power but in the end it gave them control of the land and control over all of the goods that these regions were making. Portuguese Didn't provide as much mineral wealth as the spanish until the 1690s when they discovered gold and diamonds They made a lot with sugar because for a while they were the only ones who could make it Since they didn't have native americans to turn to for labor they had a lot of slaves almost 80% or more of slaves ended up in the carribean It was like hell because it was so hot from the cauldrons  5 to 10 percent death rate a year A majority of brazils population was partially or wholly african america...
